Designing Care Robots for Dignity & Adoption
In elderly care, the hardest part of a robot is not the hardware — it is the human factors. A robot that residents and carers trust looks very different from one that only reads well on paper.
Elderly-care robots live in one of the most demanding environments there is: a home, not a warehouse. The people around them may have limited mobility, hearing or eyesight, and the staff are already stretched. Adoption — whether the robot is actually used a year later — depends far more on human-centred design than on raw specifications.
Start with the care workflow, not the robot
The best deployments remove a specific burden: ferrying meals, linens, medication and supplies so carers spend more time with residents. Map the routine, repetitive trips first — that is where a robot returns time to people, which is the whole point.
Design for dignity
A care robot should feel calm and respectful, never institutional or alarming. That means quiet operation, gentle motion, approachable height and form, clear and patient voice interaction, and behaviour that yields to people. Residents should feel assisted, not managed.
Safety is non-negotiable
- Reliable obstacle avoidance tuned for walking frames, wheelchairs and slow movement.
- Stable navigation in tight, sometimes cluttered living spaces.
- Fall or anomaly awareness with prompt staff alerting.
- Hygienic, sanitisable surfaces for shared environments.
Assist people, don't replace them
The goal is augmentation. Assistive delivery, guidance and reminders, and tele-presence that connects residents with family and clinicians all extend the care team's reach without pretending to replace human warmth.
Fit the staff, not just the residents
If a robot adds work for carers, it will be switched off. It must be simple to task, easy to clean, quick to charge, and integrated with the facility's routines. Training should take minutes, not days.
The bottom line: in elderly care, empathy is an engineering requirement. Specify for the lived experience of residents and the daily reality of staff, and the technology will follow. That is why we build these robots to order rather than from a catalogue.
